Staying Well This Autumn – With Manuka Honey Cold & Immune Support
Although it seems like we’re in a never-ending summer at the moment, the dark, shorter days will soon draw in and the average temperatures will start to drop. Whilst the low temperatures themselves do not directly cause cold and flu1, they do provide an environment for bugs to thrive and be passed around in. This is why it’s important for us to guard our immunity in time for the cold weather arriving.
Something that is able to offer additional support to the ongoing battle against autumn ills, is Manuka honey. A product of New Zealand, Manuka has been held up to be one of the most unique types of honey in the world. Its additional antibacterial benefits may be beneficial to your throat, digestive system and can calm skin conditions – it is even formulated to offer a wound healing support in hospitals and clinics around the world. When it comes to meeting those autumn ills, it may just help to provide the additional support needed too.
Manuka Honey – Ideal For The Changing Seasons.
Using honey to look after ourselves during the cold weather is nothing new, of course. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and Public Health England (PHE) issued a new guideline today that recommends the use of honey as the first line of treatment for a cough and says there is some evidence suggesting a hot drink with honey- and often with lemon and ginger as well can improve cough symptoms.
Many types of honey have been used for thousands of years to provide an added depth of flavour to a hot drink, helping to create a soothing distraction from ills. Whilst all types of honey do have a natural antibacterial element due to hydrogen peroxide, it’s actually the genetic makeup of the Manuka plant that sets it apart from other honey.
Manuka honey’s natural antibacterial activity comes from the chemical Methylglyoxal (MGO), unlike regular honey, this non peroxide antibacterial activity is stable and doesn't lose its potency when exposed to heat, light or dilution, which makes it distinct from other honeys. Unfortunately, MGO can be added to honey after it has been created – which means that there may be products on the market marked ‘Manuka’ that are not everything they say they are.
This is why the UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) ratings system exist; to provide suppliers and their customers with the peace of mind in knowing the authenticity and strength of the honey inside. The test (undertaken independently) looks for the three identifiers of Manuka honey – the MGO, DHA (Dihydroxyacetone – the age of the honey) and Leptosperin, a chemical which only occurs in Manuka plants and cannot be fabricated. Following a successful test, they are then rated based on their Manuka potency – the higher the UMF number, the more potent the Manuka.
