Key things you need to know about the Manuka honey rating systems:

  • “MGO” stands for Methylglyoxal, which is the name of the chemical marker that gives Manuka honey its unique antibacterial activity.

  • “UMF” stands for Unique Manuka Factor, which is a standard that measures MGO, DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) and Leptosperin. Leptosperin verifies the Manuka is genuine and DHA defines the age of the honey.

  • UMF 5+ is the entry point for the rating system, requiring at least MGO 83.

  • UMF is the only rating system that is independently audited to ensure all products on shelf are true-to-label.

Reading ‘MGO’ Label?

The MGO lettering is the shorthand for ‘Methylglyoxal’, the active ingredient in Manuka honey, used to measure anti-bacterial quality. Labels with MGO (plus a number) explain the presence of Methylglyoxal in the content, but be aware the minimum for a monofloral Manuka honey is MGO 83.

What Is MGO (Methylglyoxal)?

MGO is a naturally occurring chemical compound that is used to measure the anti-bacterial level of Manuka honey. It’s because of these studied antibacterial effects that MGO Manuka Honey is used to create products that may support our wellbeing – Medical grade Manuka honey is used to aid the healing process of cuts, burns and wounds in hospitals and clinics around the world.

What Makes Manuka Honey Stand Out Amongst Other Honey Types?

It’s been known for many years now that most types of honey have varying levels of antibacterial activity and there is a long history of honey being used to assist with wound healing.
Science has taught us that this natural antibacterial activity is provided by the presence of hydrogen peroxide. However, hydrogen peroxide can be affected by elements such as heat, light, time and commercial processing and as such, may offer limited antibacterial support – not all honey is the same.
Manuka honey, on the other hand, does not rely on Hydrogen Peroxide; its antibacterial quality is provided by other natural markers, such as Methylglyoxal.

What Are The UMF® Labels On Manuka Honey? How Does It Compare To MGO?

The UMF® ratings system is a trademark for the Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association (UMFHA), which is an independent standard that tests for quality and purity. Aside from looking at the Methylglyoxal content of Manuka honey, the UMF® rating also looks for two other naturally-occurring elements that indicate genuine Manuka – Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and Leptosperin.
