Feeling (spring) green
Looking for some recipe inspiration for some in season fruit and vegetable smoothies? We are feeling inspired by the spring flowers, weather and delicious produce of the season. Spring is a time for fresh new beginnings, so now you can add this smoothie into your food plan. We love the in season vegetable/herb, sorrel, which has a light, citrusy flavour and is perfect for a refreshing smoothie.
2 big handfuls sorrel (leaves and stems)
Juice of 1 lemon
Flesh of 1/2 avocado
2 large strawberries
1 tsp UMF 5+ Manuka honey
Handful of ice
Splash of water
Simply throw all of the ingredients into a high powered blender and blitz until smooth and well combined.
This recipe uses some spring ingredients, but many fruits and vegetables can be found in the supermarkets all year round. Popolular smoothie ingredients include bananas which naturally sweeten and oranges which help to add light citrusy notes.
Sorrel – An excellent source of Vitamin A and C, as well as Vitamin B-6 and Iron
Lemon – Good source of Vitamin C, B complex and is said to have alkalising properties. Lemon is one of the very low glycaemic fruits.
Avocado – Good source of Vitamin B-6, Magnesium, Iron and Vitamin C. Is high in mono and polyunsaturated fats which may help with cholesterol levels.
Strawberries – An excellent source of Vitamin C and a good source of Iron, Magnesium and even calcium. Strawberries have a high ORAC value and presence of phenolics.
