Q: Is Comvita the leading Manuka Honey company?

Comvita is New Zealand's leading producer of UMF® Manuka Honey and was the first to bring Manuka Honey to the UK.

Q: What does UMF® mean?

The UMF® (Unique Manuka Factor) trademark was established by the Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association (UMFHA). The UMF® grading system appraises natural markers found in Manuka honey, and assures purity & quality. This is compliant with the recent interim labelling guidelines published by the Ministry for Primary Industries. Not all Manuka Honeys are UMF® rated – only those which have been independently tested and verified by UMFHA are given a UMF® rating.

Q: Why are Comvita part of UMFHA?

Comvita has been part of the UMFHA since it started in 1998. By being part of the UMF association we ensure the quality and purity meets the UMF® grade. This has meant we have passed the recent testing in The Times and The Grocer for both the Comvita and Medibee brands.

Q: Is Medibee part of Comvita?

Yes, Medibee has been part of Comvita for a number of years and adheres to the same UMF® standards.

Q: Where is Comvita bottled and labelled?

All of Comvita Manuka Honey is bottled, labelled and exported ready to sell from New Zealand and therefore, complies with New Zealand Government guidance.

Q: What is the meaning of UMF® 5+, UMF® 10+, UMF® 15+ and UMF® 20+?

The UMF® grading system has two components which are expressed on any UMF® licenced honey product: 1. The label claim that it is Manuka, 2. The number - this represents three natural chemical markers that indicate the content of this honey to ensure purity and quality. This includes the key natural chemical markers DHA, MGO, and Leptosperin.

Q: Why do you not use TA (total active), Active or NPA on your labels?

TA, Active and NPA do not measure the UMF® factor, this is why Manuka has its special name and is more expensive than other honeys. When buying Manuka Honey look for the UMF® grade.

Q: Why is Manuka Honey more expensive than other honeys?

Manuka Honey is unique to New Zealand and to obtain pure Manuka Honey is a specialised task for beekeepers. Manuka Honey is more difficult to extract and has a limited harvest period as it is only collected at certain times of the year. The unique properties of Manuka Honey are well understood by consumers around the world, thereby creating a continually high level of demand.

Q: I like the taste and texture of the Manuka, what would you recommend for everyday cooking?

For everyday use in the kitchen we recommend Wildlands and Southernlands. Both blended with Manuka Honey, they are a great addition to smoothies and various recipes including cakes and granola.

Q: Why does honey’s colour and texture vary?

Honey is a natural product, influenced by seasonal and regional conditions. Some areas produce paler honey than others. Like a good wine, honey will grow in flavour and darken with age.

Q: What is added to Comvita honey?

Comvita honeys are pure with no additives.

Q: Diabetes – can I take your honey?

Nectar from plants is the sugar source for honey. It is collected by bees, stored and ripened in the hive. The resulting honey is rich in natural fructose and glucose. Diabetics should consult their healthcare professional before consuming honey.

Q: Can Manuka Honey be taken during pregnancy?

Manuka Honey has been taken by pregnant women for many years with no reported problems as a result of its ingestion.

Q: Can children take Manuka Honey?

We do not recommend that honey be given to children under the age of one.

Q: Can I use a jar of Manuka Honey on my wound?

No. Manuka Honey that is purchased in a jar is for oral/internal use only. Comvita® recommends sterile medical grade honey products such as Comvita Medihoney® Antibacterial Wound Gel™ for use on wounds.

Q: I would like to check that the Comvita product I purchased is genuine. How can I do this?

If you suspect counterfeit product, we advise you contact us with as much information as possible so we can take appropriate action. It will be useful for you to provide the details of where you purchased the product (e.g. company name, website address, country you purchased it in), its batch number (it can usually be found near the barcode) as well as clear photographs if possible. Olive Leaf FAQ

Q: Where can I find the Olive Leaf Extract Blood Sugar product?

The Olive Leaf Extract Blood Sugar, as it is known as in Australia, is simply known as Olive Leaf Extract in the UK.

Q: What is the difference between Olive Leaf Complex and Olive Leaf Extract?

It's the same product. We just renamed it to be in line with our sister companies around the world.

Q: What is the difference between the regular capsules and the new Immune Support Capsules?

Our new capsules have a new high strength formula: they contain 66mg Oleuropein combined with 11 other naturally-occuring polyphenols, as well as zinc and copper to help support the immune system.

Q: What is a Polyphenol?

Polyphenols are compounds which are found abundantly in natural plant food sources.

Q: How much Oleuropein is there in the new Olive Leaf Immune Support Capsules?

Our new Olive Leaf Extract Immune Support Capsules contain a dose of 66mg of Oleuropein per capsule. You only need to take one a day to get all the benefits of Olive Leaf Extract. Any changes to this dosage should be taken under the supervision of your healthcare practitioner.

Q: What is Oleuropein?

Oleuropein is the active ingredient found in Olive Leaves.

Q: Why does Olive Leaf Extract Liquid taste sweet?

Comvita Olive Leaf liquid contains vegetable glycerine, a natural ingredient which we use to suspend the extract. Glycerine happens to be sweet, which works well as Olive Leaf Extract on its own as an ingredient is quite bitter.

Q: Can I take Olive Leaf Extract with other medications?

Q: Can I take Olive Leaf Extract while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Q: What dosage of Olive Leaf Extract should I give to my children?

Comvita has developed Children’s Olive Leaf Extract to appeal to younger taste buds. Children’s Olive Leaf Complex can be given to children over the age of 2 years at a rate of 5mL (1 teaspoonful) twice daily. Children over two years of age may be given the original flavoured Olive Leaf Extract at 2.5mL (half teaspoonful) 2 to 3 times a day with food. Take up to 7.5mL daily. The new Immune Support Capsules shouldn't be given to children under 8 years of age without medical advice.

Q: Are Olive Leaf products Halal? Kosher?

Our Olive liquids are Halal and Kosher. The beef gelatine in the new Immune Support Capsules is from a Halal source.

Q: Are Olive Leaf products suitable for vegetarians and vegans?

If you are a vegan or vegetarian we recommend that you use the liquid Olive Leaf Extract range which is made from 100% plant derived products. Our current Olive Leaf Extract capsule products contain a gelatin coating which is not suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Q: Does Olive Leaf Extract need to be refrigerated?

No, as long as it is kept in a cool dry place, away from sunlight, it will keep its active values until the use-by date.

Q: What is the difference between Olive brands and Comvita Olive Leaf Extract?

Comvita's is the only Extract to measure the active Oleuropein.

Propolis FAQ

Q: What is Propolis?

Propolis is created by the bees from natural sap and resins found on trees. Trees produce these resins at the site of a plant injury and on new shoots. The bees collect the resin and carry it back to the hive where they mix beeswax and enzymes to make Propolis.

Q: What are the benefits of Propolis?

Propolis contains high levels of active bioflavonoids, with well known antioxidant properties. Propolis helps to support and maintain a healthy immune system.

Q: Should I take Propolis liquids, capsules or tablets? Which is best?

The strength of dose is the same, so it is more a question of suitability and personal preference. We recommend Propolis Tincture for teeth, gum and external use; Propolis Extract (alcohol free), Tablets and Capsules to be taken orally for internal use.

Q: How should I take the various Propolis products?

Propolis Capsules should be swallowed with water. Propolis Tablets can be swallowed with water or chewed before swallowing. Propolis Extract can be dropped directly into the back of the mouth and throat, or mixed in water and drunk or gargled. Propolis Tincture should be applied directly by the dropper onto the desired area.

Q: Are there any other things I should know before choosing the most appropriate Propolis product?

Vegetarians should choose the Propolis Tablets rather than Propolis Capsules due to the bovine gelatin in the capsule.

Oral Care FAQ

Q: Why did you change your toothpastes and what is different?

We removed the chlorophyll and liqourice extract to improve the colour and simultaneously achieve Natural Products Association certification.

Q: How natural are Comvita’s toothpastes?

We work hard to ensure that all our ingredients come from sustainable, renewable sources and it goes without saying that we do not test our products on animals. International certification standards for natural skin care such as BDIH, Ecocert and NPA require products to be made from at least 95% natural ingredients before they can be certified as natural.

All of our Comvita Oral Care formulations are 100% natural based on the criteria applied by Natural Products Association (NPA).

Q: Can there be any side effects with using these products?

The ingredients in the Comvita Oral Care range have been carefully chosen for their gentle but effective properties to provide oral hygiene. There are no known side effects at the quantities used in our formulations. However, if you have allergies towards propolis you should not use our Propolis Toothpaste and Propolis Toothgel formulations.

Q: Why would I buy Comvita and not another brand?

Q: Do your products expire?

The shelf life of our three toothpastes is 3 years after date of production. The Propolis Toothgel expires after 2 years from date of manufacture. Please look at the best before date (BB) of our products to know when they expire.

Q: What is xylitol and why do you use it?

Xylitol is a sweet substance commonly found in birch trees and many fruits and vegetables. Research has indicated xylitol has great tooth friendly benefits. Xylitol is one of our key ingredients that helps maintain complete oral hygiene.

Q: Why do you use baking soda?

Baking soda is a natural ingredient that cleans your teeth effectively yet gently.

Q: Why does the Comvita Oral Care range not contain Fluoride?

There is ongoing debate about the benefits, safety and side effects of fluoride in toothpaste. The main concern is really over ingestion of fluoride i.e. when toothpaste is inadvertently swallowed. For this reason, the Comvita oral care range is free of fluoride for consumers who wish to make a personal choice to avoid taking fluoride internally. This ensures that we are providing a 100% natural, safe and effective product to enhance oral hygiene.

Q: How long should I expect my online order to take to be delivered?

Q: Can we take honey overseas?

Honey can be taken from New Zealand to many other countries. However, the customs officials in each market are able to deny entry of product even if the product is legally sold in their country. Honey cannot be taken to Western Australia, Samoa or Vanuatu. Please check with your local customs website.
