Why Manuka Honey is Truly ‘Super’

Honey has been used for thousands of years in our food, drinks and even to contribute to our skincare routines.

Collected from the unique Manuka flower, native to the remote, unspoilt regions in New Zealand, Manuka honey has been found to contain special properties over most other regular types of honey. But what makes Manuka stand out? Here are some key differences between ‘regular’ honey and Manuka, marking out why it should indeed be considered as a ‘superfood’:

Nutritional content and strength are different in each type of honey – it’s down to the species of the flower that make all the difference. The nectar produced by the Manuka plant contains Unique Manuka Factor, which makes Manuka flowers truly one of nature’s special gifts.

All honey has an anti-bacterial effect from hydrogen peroxide. However, this is not stable and can be easily affected by temperature and light. Manuka honey contains non-hydrogen peroxide-bacterial activity, Methylglyoxal (MGO), which is more stable than normal honey.

Unfortunately, MGO can be added into honey, which is why we test for all 3 naturally occurring chemical markers: Leptosperin, Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and Methylglyoxal. This enables us to ensure the best quality, genuine UMF® Manuka honey.
